Farm/Farmer Kundwa Women's Farmer Group

About this coffee

Kundwa Women Coffee is grown by a women-only farmer group within the Aba Sholi Co-operative in Cyeza, Muhanga District, Rwanda. Founded by 30 women in 2008, the co-operative now brings together 610 producers who grow coffee at 1800–2000 metres above sea level. Among Muhanga’s rolling hills, fruit farms and ancient Sebwugugu rocks, Aba Sholi’s washing station provides a place to process their coffee cherries. The co-operative also supports the wider community through jobs, a health centre and access to water, while offering members health insurance and loans to help cover essentials such as school fees. Its name means “mutual assistance” in Kinyarwanda, reflecting a commitment to shared progress. In 2015, Aba Sholi became Fair Trade certified and won a Rwanda Cup of Excellence award.

In the cup: concentrated apple juice, maraschino cherry, raisins, florals and honey. Available roasted for espresso or for filter brewing — choose the roast that suits how you brew.

How to brew

Filter: 15 g of coffee to 250 g of water (1:16) at 92–94 °C; total brew time around 2:45–3:15 on V60, Kalita or AeroPress.
